What the Day Involves
The drive is most of it
Google gives 4 hours 40 minutes each way without stops. Add Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, a black beach and a lunch stop and you have the 14-hour day the operators advertise, of which roughly ten hours are in the seat.
That is not a criticism, it is the geography. Iceland's South Coast is 370 km of waterfalls, lava fields and glacier tongues, and a coach that skipped them to reach the lagoon faster would be a worse day out.
The two versions, and the one difference that matters
The standard trip at $232.96 gets you to the lagoon, gives you time on the shore and crosses to Diamond Beach. The $328 version does the same and adds a 30-minute amphibian cruise among icebergs the guides date at 1,000 to 1,500 years.
That $95 difference is the whole decision. Buying the boat ticket yourself at the lagoon costs 7,100 ISK, about $58, so the packaged version carries a premium for the certainty of a seat on a summer day.

What you stop at on the way
Seljalandsfoss is the one you walk behind, so expect to get wet and to want a waterproof rather than an umbrella. Skógafoss is the wall of water with the staircase beside it, and the spray reaches the car park on a windy day.
Most itineraries add Vík's black sand and Reynisfjara's basalt columns. That beach has sneaker waves that have killed visitors, and the guides are firm about staying back from the water for good reason.

A rental with insurance for the day, fuel for 740 km and your own concentration for ten hours on a road with single-lane bridges and no hard shoulder. In summer the arithmetic can favour a car for two or more people.
In winter it stops being about money. This road closes with little warning, and a February 2026 traveller watched several people miss a morning departure because the road out of Vík shut overnight. On a coach that is the driver's problem; in a rental it is yours.

The case for sleeping on the coast instead
The two-day trip at $639 splits the same 370 km with a hotel night, breakfast and a guided blue ice hike on Sólheimajökull. The winter version at $652 swaps in an ice cave and a northern lights attempt.
Against $232.96 for one long day, the two-day price looks steep until you count what the day trip cannot include: any glacier walk, any cave, and any evening light at the lagoon.
Who the day trip is right for

The Stops, and Which Ones Deserve Your Time

The path behind the curtain is the reason this one is on every itinerary, and it puts spray on your lens and down your collar. Waterproof trousers are not overkill in a westerly.
Gljúfrabúi hides in a cleft a few minutes' walk north, and half the coaches never mention it. If your stop is 40 minutes, spend 15 there instead of queuing on the wet path.
Skógafoss and the stairs
Sixty metres of water hitting a flat plain, which is why the spray reaches the car park and why rainbows sit in front of it on a bright afternoon. The staircase up the eastern side is 370-odd steps to a platform above the lip.
Worth it if the stop is an hour. Not worth it if it is 30 minutes and you would rather stand at the bottom and actually look.
Reynisfjara, and the reason guides get stern
The black beach at Vík has basalt columns, sea stacks and a wave pattern that has killed visitors. Sneaker waves run far further up the sand than the previous twenty did, and the undertow is unsurvivable.
Guides ask people to stay well back from the waterline and mean it. Photographs from the columns are better anyway.
The bit nobody photographs: the sandur
Between Vík and the lagoon the road crosses Skeiðarársandur, a plain of black glacial outwash the size of a small county, built by floods that burst out from under Vatnajökull.
It looks like nothing at 90 km/h and it is one of the strangest landscapes in Europe. The twisted girders beside the road are what a 1996 glacial flood did to the bridge that used to be there.
